At Wild Sun Behavioral Services we strive to meet the individual where they are.  We believe that what makes each of us unique is what makes us great, however, problem behaviors can limit one’s potential, cause harm, put a strain on family dynamics, limit social development, and challenge access to an optimal education.

In-Home Services

Wild Sun Behavioral Services’ in-home division serves clients in their home and community environment. Treatment is centered around all domains in which a client displays deficits. The treatment team establishes meaningful goals, teaches the necessary skills, tracks progress, and then plans for generalization. This service may also include parent training.

Early Intervention ABA Clinic

Wild Sun Behavioral Services’ Early Intervention Clinic is located in historic downtown Erie, Colorado 

Learn the skills necessary to reduce challenging behavior, increase communication, and prepare for school readiness. Children learn through play and exploring in their environment. Many preschools are set up to engage children in play. However, many children with autism and other developmental disabilities must first learn play/imitation/social skills and observational learning in order to develop kindergarten readiness skills. We are here to provide individualized learning and parent training to support your child and the entire family through our Early Intervention ABA Clinic.

Social Skills Group

Unstuck and On Target© Curriculum

The group structure is based on the Unstuck and On Target© curriculum and is implemented during child-led activities.

Activities may include: table games, art activities, puzzles, gross motor games, building/construction projects, among others.

We prioritize the real-life application of learned skills.

DANIEL KURTY, M.ED, BCBA
Founder/Executive Director/Behavior Analyst

After receiving a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and a Master’s degree in Education, Dan began working in the field of Applied Behavior Analysis in 2012.  He has a passion for working with youth and their caregivers to support the learning and developmental processes.

In 2014 Dan relocated to the US Virgin Islands in order to establish the first ABA program for children in the territory (St. John, St. Thomas, and St. Croix).  The program is now flourishing and serving over fifty children in the territory.

Over the course of his career in ABA Dan has worked for a variety of organizations and has discovered that the field is in need of an increased standard of care. Through Wild Sun Behavioral Services he intends to provide more direct ABA services to clients, provide greater supervision to behavioral technicians, hire highly qualified therapists, and focus on training and supporting parents and caretakers.

Dan’s ultimate goal is to shift the ABA paradigm.

Founder/Director of Operations

Alexis has been in the mental health field since graduating with her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from James Madison University in 2005. Alexis has since explored a variety of health fields including Applied Behavior Analysis, emergency psychiatric support, emergency medicine, and physical fitness. She then returned to school to pursue her Master’s degree in Transpersonal Counseling Psychology at Naropa University in 2007, which is how she landed in Colorado.

Alexis and Dan Kurty then temporarily moved to the Virgin Islands to support the creation of an ABA program for children in the USVI. Upon returning to Colorado in 2016, Alexis and Dan decided to establish Wild Sun Behavioral Services. Alexis provides administrative and organizational support to the staff and clients at Wild Sun.

In her “free time,” she also raises two children, consults as a marketing support specialist, freelances as a group fitness instructor, serves as the Volunteer Coordinator for Hanuman Festival, and spends as much time as allowable being physically active.

HOLLY DANA, MSW, BCBA

Holly started her career with a Master’s in Social Work from New Mexico State University in 2009. She worked for a cooperative of school districts as an at-risk counselor in rural Indiana. Holly worked with individuals ages five through eighteen providing cognitive behavioral therapy and social skills groups for individuals on the autism spectrum.

After moving to Colorado she started her career in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), as a therapist for children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder and other developmental disabilities. Holly fell in love with ABA and soon completed her coursework to become a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) in 2015. She has since worked with children in both clinic and home settings.

HEATHER HUBER, M.Ed, RBT

Heather was born and raised in the Valley of the Sun, Phoenix, Arizona. She played volleyball in college while pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Child Development at Texas Tech University (1998) in Lubbock. She then went on to earn a Master’s degree in Special Education from Incarnate Word University (2001) in San Antonio. She has taught in the classroom and practiced many years as an Early Childhood Special Education teacher before moving her family to Colorado.

Heather is married to Chris and has 6 children and too many animals to count. Days and nights are busy with various sports and trips for forgotten items at the grocery store.

JORDYN ADAMS, BS, RBT

Jordyn was born in Southern California and moved to Southeast Colorado when she was 8 years old. In May of 2019 she graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology with a minor in Zoology from Colorado State University. Upon graduating she began work in ABA and her training to become a Registered Behavior Technician. 

She is passionate about working with children and has enjoyed her many years of nannying. Her hobbies include her many exotic animals, including a Savannah monitor lizard, axolotls, bearded dragons, and a chuckwalla. For fun she enjoys hiking, swimming, and spending time with people she loves.

MIKAELA PRICE, Behavior Therapist

Mikaela was born and raised in Natick, Massachusetts, a small town outside of Boston. With a very early passion for working with children, she became a preschool assistant teacher at 14 and completed classes in high school to get her teaching license upon graduation. She worked for eight years at Tobin Children School in MA. She has her associates degree in Early Childhood Education.

Mikaela moved to Colorado three years ago and has been working at the Boulder JCC preschool. During her time at JCC she worked directly with students with special needs, and soon realized that she wanted to pursue further experience and education in the field. She will begin her bachelor’s degree in Special Education in the fall of 2019.

In her free time she enjoys exploring the mountains with her dog, spending time with friends and family, horseback riding, skiing, drawing, and painting.

MOLLIE MATSON, BSW, RBT

Mollie was born and raised in Longmont, CO. She graduated with her Bachelor’s in Social Work from Colorado State University in 2019. During her senior year internship at Mental Health Partners, Mollie discovered a love for working in mental and behavioral health.

Mollie also works at a thrift store in downtown Boulder, CO. When not working she enjoys baking, reading, and being outside.

JENNIFER EDWARDS, BA, RBT

Jennifer was born and raised in Salida, Colorado with The Great Sand Dunes as her backyard. While getting her BA in Clinical Psychology at Adams State University, she discovered her passion for working with kids with special needs while interning at a special education program.

After graduating in 2016, Jennifer worked for 2 years as a teacher in a daycare for ages 0-3 while working to get her RBT certification. Since then she has been working as an RBT and a behavior coach in SVVSD, continuing to find her passion working with young people with social/emotional and behavioral needs.

In her free time Jennifer loves to hike and go on adventures throughout the Rocky Mountains. She enjoys as much time with family as friends as she can get.

Jennifer is now working towards her Master’s degree with an emphasis in ABA through Purdue Global to become a BCBA.

BRETON MCNAMARA, BA, Behavior Therapist

Breton was born and raised in Pittsburgh, PA and has been working in the mental health field for the last five years, since he moved to Colorado. After beginning his college career in 2007 with a couple of years at Berklee College of Music, and then working as a touring musician for a few years, he finally returned and completed his undergraduate education in 2019 at University of Colorado Boulder with a BA in Psychology. Breton is currently a Masters of Social Work student at CSU, where he is expected to graduate in the spring of 2021.

Before returning to finish his undergraduate education, Breton worked in the field of mental health in different clinical and administrative capacities. The population that Breton has worked with are people experiencing addiction issues, those with histories of trauma/homelessness, as well as students in the public school system. Breton has a passion for working with youth and has the goal of earning his LCSW credentials and working within the school system. He looks forward to furthering his knowledge and practice of ABA and learning through shared knowledge from the staff and clients of Wild Sun.

MERGEN MITTLEIDER, MSW, RBT

Mergen received her Bachelor’s in Social Work from Nebraska Wesleyan University in 2006. She returned home to Colorado immediately after graduation. She worked in a variety of settings, including inpatient psychiatric hospitals, group homes, and in the school system with students with developmental disabilities. She went on to obtain her Master’s degree in Social Work from Colorado State University in 2011. 

Mergen has since worked in a variety of health fields utilizing several modalities of treatment including cognitive behavior and dialectical behavior therapies. She has extensive experience with individuals struggling with mental health disorders, emergency psychiatric services, and crisis intervention. 

As an RBT, Mergen anticipates continuing her training to become a Board Certified Behavior Analyst. Mergen is passionate about helping others and looks forward to continuing to learn as much as she can about ABA.

During her free time she enjoys time with her daughter and her 4 cats. She loves crafting, especially working on string art.

ROXANNE PARADEZA, BA, RBT

Roxanne moved to Yuma, AZ from the Philippines when she was nine years old. She lived in Arizona most of her life before moving to Dallas, Texas when she landed a job as a flight attendant. After a year working as a flight attendant, she felt that she wanted to do something else. She moved to Colorado on a whim in 2016 and worked various jobs while she saved up for college, not really knowing what she wanted to do. She graduated with a degree in Communication with a pre-health minor in 2019 from Metropolitan State University of Denver and stumbled on the field of ABA.

As an RBT Roxanne found her passion in making a difference in someone’s life and being able to connect with her clients on a more personal level. Roxanne anticipates continuing her training to become a Board Certified Behavior Analyst and looks forward to continuing to learn as much as she can about ABA.

In her free time, she likes to enjoy the great outdoors and go hiking, camping and fishing. She also has four dogs (Ada, Mitzi, Vera, and August) that keep her busy during her free time. Lastly, she enjoys traveling and going to places she has yet to discover.

JENNIFER KUHN, MSW, Behavior Therapist

Jennifer was born and raised in Boulder Colorado. She graduated with a BA in English – Creative Writing from University of Colorado Boulder in 2018. She went on to obtain her Masters in Social Work from Colorado State University in 2020.

Jennifer has swam competitively most of her life and first found her passion for working with children when she accepted a job as a developmental swim coach in 2013. She also worked as a TA in the education department at CU Boulder and worked at a nursery during her study abroad year in the UK. Jennifer had the opportunity to work with special education students through her two internships during her MSW, which only strengthened her desire to pursue ABA.

In her free time Jennifer loves to read, write and listen to music. She enjoys spending time with her friends and her cat Benjamin.

CASEY DUNNE, BA, Behavior Therapist

Casey began her undergraduate career as a Studio Art major at Bucknell University before transferring to the University of Colorado at Boulder where she received her Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology. She still carries a passion for art and is interested in exploring how art therapy can help children learn to communicate their emotions with themselves and others.

Currently Casey is working towards her RBT certification and is excited to expand her knowledge of ABA therapy. Casey has a personal connection to children with special needs and has first-hand experience seeing the benefits that ABA therapy can have on an individual and their family. She was born and raised in Connecticut where she saw her sister transcend behavioral boundaries that once seemed impossible.

In her free time, Casey enjoys reading, painting, and spending time in nature with her dogs. She also actively volunteers with NAMI Boulder.

ALEX MOORHEAD, BA, Behavior Therapist

Alex began her career working with young children at a young age. Starting at 15 years old she worked as a camp counselor and lifeguard. Her enjoyment working win the childcare industry grew as she then worked as a ski coach and childcare provider. Alex also began studying architecture in New York City in 2018 but realized a year later that her real passion was working with children. She then worked as a special education para-educator for kindergarten through fourth grade. This experience inspired her to continue her education. She is now pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences at CU Boulder.

Before living in Colorado, Alex lived in New Hampshire and spent a great deal of time enjoying the outdoors in New England. She is now excited to explore more of Colorado, grow her knowledge in the field of ABA and collaborate with the clients and staff of Wild Sun.

In her free time Alex loves to ski, hike, and cook. She also loves to spend time with her friends, family, and especially her dog, Murphy.

ZACHARY HAWLEY, BA, Behavior Therapist

Zach was born and raised in a small town in Nevada. In 2016 he moved to Ithaca, NY where he competed as a shot put and discus thrower on the varsity track team while earning his BA in Psychology with a Minor is Business from Cornell University. Originally pursuing an engineering degree, Zach quickly found his passion for working with people after taking an Intro to Psychology course. He pursued his passion by later performing research for Cornell’s PAC Lab as well as coaching track and field for high school and middle school athletes.

Zach decided to call Colorado home shortly after his 2020 graduation when he fell in love with its beauty and most importantly, its people. Zach has an intense passion for understanding, teaching, and helping others improve their lives. Working towards his RBT certification, Zach is eager to learn more about ABA and grow his knowledge through working and collaborating closely with clients and Wild Sun staff.

In his free time Zach enjoys strength training, hiking, playing guitar, and spending time with his family and friends while exploring Colorado.

FAQs

WHERE ARE SERVICES PROVIDED?

We provide services either in the client’s home and community settings (ie. school, recreational locations, stores, etc), at our clinic, or a combination of the two.  This flexibility in treatment location lends itself well to providing services on a regular basis and tends to be more manageable for the family.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT FROM ABA SERVICES?

You can expect a functional behavior assessment to be conducted that will outline hypothesized function(s) of problem behavior.  With this information we will create a behavior plan that will include: treatment goals, implementation strategies, and recommended service hours.

Each client presents a unique situation and therefore service recommendations can vary from single consultation services to 40 hours per week of direct service.

A progress report will be completed every six months to evaluate the client’s response to treatment, update goals, and modify treatment recommendations as necessary.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN “DIRECT” AND “CONSULTATION” SERVICES?

Consultation services are indirect services focused primarily on caregiver training and support.  We strive to provide the stakeholders with the skills necessary to implement the recommended strategies to modify the client’s behavior.  This service includes an assessment and treatment plan, which is intended to be implemented directly by those closest to the client, rather than a behavior technician.

Direct services begin with an assessment of the individual’s problem behavior.  We then develop a behavior plan to meet the family/stakeholder’s individual needs.  From there we provide extensive training implementation and data collection as well as an ongoing analysis of behavior and parent training.

HOW LONG WILL YOU BE WORKING WITH MY CHILD?

This answer varies significantly depending on your particular situation (including the target behavior, the severity of the behavior, and the commitment of the caregivers).  For some clients, behavior change can occur as quickly as six months.  Other clients may require ongoing treatment to continually develop skills and reduce problem behaviors as new challenges present themselves in their ever-changing world.

WHAT TYPES OF BEHAVIORS DO YOU ADDRESS? 

Some of the typical behaviors we address are: aggression, tantrums, non-compliance, off-task behaviors, academic engagement issues, disruptive behaviors, and repetitious behaviors/speech patterns, among others.

In addition to behavior reduction, we also work on skill acquisition (ie. communication/social/daily living skills, academic goals, and other adaptive behaviors).

WHAT INSURANCES DO YOU ACCEPT? 

We currently accept Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield, Tricare, Cigna, United Healthcare, and Medicaid.

If insurance does not cover ABA services for you, we are happy to discuss sliding scale options for private pay.

Behavior Therapist/Registered Behavior Technician

Behavior Technicians are trained to implement 1:1 behavioral intervention programs to children in home, community, or school settings. Initially, Behavior Technicians will participate in a training program that provides instruction on Applied Behavior Analysis, management of maladaptive behaviors, social skills development, and data collection techniques applicable to our client population. Training opportunities continue throughout employment as our Behavior Technicians receive on-going supervision from a Board Certified Behavior Analyst.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School Diploma or equivalent (College enrollment or Bachelor’s degree preferred)
  • Reliable means of transportation with proof of auto insurance and Driver’s license
  • Must pass TB test and show proof of immunizations
  • Must pass criminal background check
  • Must have afternoon and evening availability

REQUIREMENTS

  • Applies behavior principles consistently in all interactions with clients and takes accurate and reliable data for all areas of treatment
  • Implements Individualized Treatment Plans under the direction of the BCBAs and/or Program Supervisors
  • Assists clients to acquire academic and/or appropriate life skills. This may include toilet training, eating, and other self-help skills
  • Supports all members of the staff and assists with ideas, suggestions and work duties
  • Actively participates in staff training programs designed to increase overall skills
  • Implements program plans and other instructional activities
  • Communicates in a professional and respectful manner with parents, behavior analysts/program supervisors, speech therapists, occupational therapists and administrative staff
  • Assists in creating instructional materials
  • Attends and participates in meetings, fundraisers, and other sponsored events
  • Observes, records, and reports the condition and behavior of the clients, including maintaining daily records during the day
  • Functions as an active member of the treatment team
  • Works with clients, consultants, staff, families, and community members to implement the client’s treatment plans
  • Consistently implements behavior plans to reduce client’s socially inappropriate behavior and promote appropriate social behaviors
  • Effectively responds to and manages crisis situations, which may include client physical aggression
  • Completes daily paperwork and data collection notes in a detailed, accurate, consistent and timely manner

Wild Sun Behavioral Services is a rapidly expanding ABA organization that provides services across the Front Range of Colorado.
